QUICK LINKS:

The Southern African Conference on AI Research is pleased to announce SACAIR2022, the Southern African Artificial Intelligence Conference: Artificial Intelligence for Social Justice.

This multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary conference is expected to grow into the premier AI conference in Southern Africa and will bring together nationally and internationally established and emerging researchers from across various disciplines including Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Informatics, Humanities and Philosophy. The conference will, as in the past, also focus on growing a formidable network of talented students working in AI from across Africa.

SACAIR is affiliated to the Centre for AI Research (CAIR). CAIR is a South African distributed research network that was established in 2011 with the aim of building world-class Artificial Intelligence research capacity in South Africa. CAIR conducts foundational, directed and applied research into various aspects of AI through its nine research groups: Adaptive and Cognitive Systems, AI and Cybersecurity, AI for Development, Applications of Machine Learning, Computational Logic, Ethics of AI, Foundations of Machine Learning, Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, and Probabilistic Modelling. An important part of CAIR’s mandate is to develop and nurture an Artificial Intelligence ecosystem within South Africa.

SACAIR2022 is the third to be held under the SACAIR brand. The conference will build on the successes of the past three conferences.

SACAIR2022 will be hosted at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS)  in Stellenbosch, from 5 to 9 December 2022.

SACAIR 2022 will offer four main tracks:

  • Algorithmic, Data and Logic Driven AI (Computer Science)
  • Socio-technical and human-centered AI (Information Systems)
  • Responsible and Ethical AI (Philosophy and Law)
  • Inter- and transdisciplinary AI research

The programme includes an unconference for students on 5 December 2022 (a student-driven event for students to interact with each other as well as with sponsors and other possible employers), a day of tutorials on 6 December 2022 and the main conference from 7 – 9 December 2022.
